About the Event

Greetings fellow Stoics!

Today is the first of our Meditations cafés. There is no evidence that the Stoics hosted any seminars in which they journaled or meditated as a group. However, this is our attempt to breath a little life into a modern Stoic curriculum. During these cafés we sit down for a 30-minute journaling session. While we journal, the broader point is to critically self-reflect. As the maxim written at the top of the temple of Apollo at Delphi read, "Know thyself". There is no prescription of what about or how you must write, however. You may use an especially Stoic technique including premeditatio malorum (negative visualization), contempating the sage, consolations, or others. On the other hand, you are free to write in whichever way you feel is best for you. The only requirement for those thirty minutes is that you write and you write about yourself – of coure, not in the prideful sense, but in a reflective and critical one.

For the subsequent 30 minutes we can put our pens or pencils down or close our laptops and discuss with each other how it went. You don't have to disclose anything personal if you don't wish. You can just listen or simply discuss the technique or practice you implemented but not the content of what you wrote.

This is not a workshop, but a free space for us to journal, whether you be Stoic or not. We may only serve these meditations cafés once a month on average, but we also encourage each of us to journal or critically self-examine more frequently. Furthermore, journaling isn't for everyone. Some of our regular participants are Buddhists who feel more comfortable using their meditation techniques, others feel better staying active in their own heads without putting anything down on paper. Journaling is simply a wrench in the toolbox and if it works for you, that's great. Join others for encouragement, motivation, a safe space, and most importantly a designated time dedicated for this specific art of self-reflection and self-betterment. You can read more about our plans for a Stoic curriculum here:

Anyone can attend. There are no restrictions as far as level of experience or knowledge of Stoicism you have had acquired before this. The location hasn't yet been set – stay tuned! However, keep in mind that: (1) regardless we're imposing a six person maximum; (2) if we meet indoors you must either show proof of being tested negative against the COVID-19 virus or having passed the 14-day mark after being fully vaccinated. If we meet outdoors, your being vaccinated or having recovered from the virus will mean you are exempt from the six-person maximum, so the more of us vaccinated, the better!

You cannot register for this event here on our website; you must register on our meetup page for this event.

A couple of words: (1) If you haven't already, you can join our Telegram discussion group and our announcements channel by contacting us with your cell number and we'll add you. (2) We usually record our online events – with the express permission of our participants – but we never record events in person. For some in-person events like discussions we may provide a means for those to participate over the phone or video conference, but for these meditations cafés you can only participate in-person.

We look forward to seeing you there!
