About the Event

Greetings fellow Stoics!

Today we're hosting a discussion on Stoic care. This topic was inspired from our last discussion (thank you Paul!) after encountering the resource hub for all things Stoicism and its relationship to self-care, mental health, and cosmopolitanism, created by Eve Riches and Brittany Polat. They're experts when it comes to the impact Stoicism can have on parenting and education.

Take their mission statement:

Our mission is to share Stoicism with everyone who cares for people and our planet in a personal or professional capacity. Specifically, we aim to

  • Connect caregivers from different fields and within the same field who are interested in Stoicism.
  • Introduce Stoicism more broadly into the caring professions and caregiving roles.
  • Provide resources to help caregivers alleviate stress, reduce burnout, manage emotions, and care more effectively.
  • Explore the deep connections between and theoretical foundations of Stoicism and care.

You can find their mission statement and more details about Eve and Brittany on their about page. Eve and Brittany approach Stoicism from the perspective that it can empower the individual to reach out and help their community, the planet, and the next generation as well as those parents, educators, and other care professionals raising the next generation. They stand firm that Stoicism can improve emotional resilience and empower individuals with agency if they interact with the world as cosmopolitans, develop their character as something inviolable, and understand the extent of their control over their lives.

This is part one of a two-part series of discussions. The second part will be hosted on Monday, 21. February at 18:30 CET, which doesn't yet have a defined topic of discussion, but will likely focus on either mental health and/or general psychological research on resilience.

This is a level 1 event, which means you don't need any background  knowledge of the philosophy or experience with its practices. Please consult the details on what level 1 means here: Anyone can attend and we doon't request any participation fees.

Today's discussion will run 1.5 hours, though don't feel discouraged from attending if you know you will have to leave early. We don't partition the time, but we will always connect the theory to practice. In fact regarding this topic the theory ultimately derives from the practice!

A couple of words: (1) If you haven't already, you can join our Telegram discussion group and our announcements channel by contacting us and we'll send you a link to the channel. (2) The link to this event will be active between 20 and 10 minutes ahead of the start time, and we use for our video conferencing. (3) Lastly, we have recently been streaming our events live on youtube and saving them on file, especially for those who cannot make particular events; at the start of each event, Steve will of course ask if everyone is okay or anyone has a problem with this. Furthermore, we only share recordings afterwards if we reach the threshold of 4 participants (other than the facilitator).
