About the Event
Greetings fellow Stoics!
This week we have guest speaker StoicDan who is volunteering his time to give us a presentation on Stoic discipline. Below is a short summary of the presentation followed by a short bio of StoicDan.
This "Stoic Discipline: The 3/4/5 Method" new presentation in 2021 explores several avenues to practicing Stoic discipline. We'll start with the 3 disciplines (desire, action, assent) and then cover the 4 virtues (wisdom, justice, courage, temperance). Finally, StoicDan will present the "5 steps to virtue", which were the 5 most popular topics for members of the Orlando Stoics over 5 years of meetings. People said these 5 tools were "life changing". After the slides, there will be time for Q&A.
StoicDan is the organizer of 6 philosophy meetups, including Orlando Stoics, which is the third largest Stoic discussion group in North America. He is also a public speaker on Stoicism, Minimalism, and American Transcendentalism, and he often connects these topics with civil discourse, common ground, and women in philosophy. He’s presented at 4 Stoicon conferences (2017 Toronto, 2018 London, 2019 Athens, and 2020 online) and has interviewed over a dozen Stoic scholars for the Stoic Fellowship quarterly newsletter. His ‘pandemic’ project is a series of short-form philosophy videos (about 2-3 minutes each). The series is on YouTube, called “Self-Reliance” (175+ videos) at https://bit.ly/3ajL75j. Make sure to also check out StoicDan's website for more information and further Stoic and related resources here: http://stoicdan.com/.
The presentation lasts approximately 30 minutes, after which we will give attendees 30 minutes of questions for a Q&A session with StoicDan. Thereafter, Steve will continue the Berlin Stoics meetup for another 30 minutes so those Berlin Stoics interested in sticking around longer can further digest and reflect on what StoicDan presented.
A couple of words: (1) If you haven't already, you can join our Telegram discussion group and our announcements channel by contacting us with your cell number and we'll add you. (2) The link to this event will be posted between 20 and 10 minutes ahead of the start time, and we use https://meet.jit.si/ for our video conferencing. (3) Lastly, we have recently been streaming our events live on youtube and saving them on file, especially for those who cannot make particular events; at the start of each event, Steve will of course ask if everyone is okay or anyone has a problem with this.
We look forward to seeing you there!
